Release the (marketing) hounds!

Spokane, battered, bloody and knocked to the ground by too many scandals to re-list here, and held to the ground by one of the nations worst metro economies, has decided that its far better to light up the PR machine than actually fix the problems.

The five videos each feature a specific Spokane topic. They are quality of life, education, health care, Spokane business, and Fairchild Air Force Base.

Lets see:

Quality of life: non-existent
Education: lower quality than state and national norms
Health Care: you'll die sooner in Spokane
Business climate: failing
Fairchild AFB: slowly closing

You can read some of the stats here.

Iraq, day 924

Here are some facts:

From March 20, 2003 through through May 1, 2003 (the end of major combat), the US-led collition lost a total of 173 soldiers. 140 of these were "US soldiers".

From May 2, 2003 through June 28, 2004 (when sovereignty turned over to Iraq) the US and its partners in war lost a total of 803 more soldiers, 718 of them "American".

From June 29, 2004 (the day after the official turnover of sovereignty to Iraq) through January 30, 2005 (Iraq Elections), 632 more men and women (579 Americans) lost their lives on 'our' side of this war.

And from January 31, 2005 (the day after Iraq Elections) through yesterday, "we" lost another 511 brave men and women in uniform (485 of these are US nationals).

This makes a total of 2119 lives (1922 of them "American") expended over 924 days. We average 2.3 deaths per day on "our side" of this 2.5 year long quagmire. The Iraq "war on terror" is now well over twice as long as the 444-day "Iran Hostage Crisis".

The Vietnam War started with a slower death rate than what we have in Iraq. The United States had been involved in Vietnam for six years before total fatalities surpassed 500 in 1965, the year President Lyndon B. Johnson ordered a massive buildup of forces. In Iraq there were 582 servicemen and servicewomen killed in the first 365 days.

There were 20,000 troops in Vietnam by the end of 1964. There were more than 200,000 a year later. The Army plans to keep troop levels at 120,000 until "at least the end of 2006". There were over 150,000 US troops in Iraq last month.

By the end of 1966, U.S. combat deaths in Vietnam had reached 3,910. By 1968, the peak of U.S. involvement, there were more than 500,000 troops in the country.

"There are some who, uh, feel like that, you know, the conditions are such that they can attack us there. My answer is: Bring 'em on. We got the force necessary to deal with the security situation. “ - George W. Bush, July 2, 2003.

The Iraqi people mounted no successful opposition to Saddam, yet they have extracted a terrible price from the US-led forces. Is it possible that the Iraqi people have risen up against what they view as an imperialist invasion much more unjust than the Hussein regime?

An Iraqui national referendum on the charter constitutions is to be held Oct. 15, followed by December elections based on the constitutional referendum. Watch what happens as those dates approach.

Cyan turning pink

That healthy glow is starting to appear in Mead, WA. About three weeks ago, I wrote about the recent Cyan layoffs

I've recently been told two things. First, that it was more like 25 heads rolling at Cyan, and second that quite a few of these have been hired back. Its not yet publicly announced, but Cyan has a deal with a West Coast entertainment publishing company for a new product. Details to emerge after terms are finalized. Remember, you read it here, first.

Interestingly, Cyan isn't on the Spokane list of high-tech employers. Neither is Vivato. Hmm.

SCAPCA increases its google juice

I noticed today that if you Google for SCAPCA, the first 50 links all point back to SCAPCA's website. A situation that didn't exist as recently as late last week.

I think the minions at one of the most corrupt organizations in the Inland Northwest have been busy little beavers.

What to do....

In other news, further details of the resignation of SCAPCA's dictator, Eric Skelton have emerged. Quoting the Spokane newspaper:

Skelton is the victim of a smear campaign aided and abetted by SCAPCA's board, said Karen Lindholdt, a public-interest environmental attorney. "We live in a political climate where industry feels enabled to go after someone who is cleaning up the air," Lindholdt said.

Spokane County Commissioner Todd Mielke, who joined the SCAPCA board last fall, denied there was an intentional effort to get rid of Skelton. Recent accusations by two businessmen that SCAPCA staff had fraudulently altered asbestos inspection reports proved to be "without merit," Mielke said. But the board wants to redirect SCAPCA from a "heavy-handed" regulatory approach used in the past, where the agency obtained some of its revenues for its $1.8 million annual budget through fines on regulated industries, Mielke said.

"The so-called 'heavy-handed' program we're running was adopted by the SCAPCA board in 2002. We are carrying out what the board directed," Skelton said.

I was a victim of Skelton's "heavy handed" approach, and I can't begin to explain the trauma that the man caused to both myself and my family. I am now left to openly wonder if I can sue he skinny white ass for same.

Skelton's departure from SCAPCA is not a travesty, it is justice. Here's to the political process in Spokane working to correct abuses by those, like Skelton, who fancy themselves little Hitlers. Spokane is a better place with Skelton's departure, and I have little doubt that Spokane's new board will work to crush any remaining support for Skelton's methods.

In that way, Spokane will slowly find itself a better place.

Ding dong, the witch is dead...

SCAPCA's Eric Skelton has resigned under political pressure.

In August, the board heard complaints from two local businesses, Inland Asphalt and Northwest Renovators, Inc., that SCAPCA was meddling in zoning decisions and too quick to hand out fines and penalties. At that meeting, renovators Mike Lee and Doug Gore accused SCAPCA of falsifying asbestos tests on property they'd purchased as an investment.

The accusation turned out to be meritless, according to an internal review presented to the SCAPCA board in September by staff attorney Michelle Wolkey.

Oh yeah, sure it was, Michelle.

SCAPCA has called a Special Board Meeting.

Perhaps they'll discuss the obvious self-dealing and conflict of interest issues that surround having your outside counsel (Michelle Pope) on your board.

With any luck, the new guy (or gal, whatever) will kick Matt Holmquist to the curb.

SLAVERY AND FORCED LABOR ALIVE AND KICKING IN SPOKANE

Man, you gotta love a headline like that. PETA explains why they picked Spokane.

The huge walk-through exhibit juxtaposes images of once-accepted acts of cruelty to humans with images of present-day cruelty to animals. Why Spokane? Because just as it is still considered acceptable for circuses to remove elephants and other animals from their families and beat them for exhibiting natural behaviors, it was once thought acceptable to remove Native American children from their families and "educate" them in boarding schools—including the Fort Spokane Indian School—where they suffered severe punishment for speaking their native languages:

The exhibit reminds observers that not long ago, it wasn’t just other animals who were persecuted because they were deemed inferior. The display includes images of slaves who were chained, beaten, branded, and forcibly separated from their families; Native Americans who were evicted from their ancestral lands; women who fought for the right not to be treated as their husbands’ property; and children forced to work long hours in dangerous and unhealthy conditions.

ESR: worst nightmare of FOSS *and* village idiot

Eric Raymond (aka 'ESR'), who claims to have invented "open source", received a query from a Microsoft head hunter. Eric responded, and then decided he hadn't said enough, when in fact, he'd already said too much.

John Leach asks, in reply (and comic-strip form), "Do tribes have the equivalent of a villiage idiot?"

Exhibit 'A':

In Jim Jarmusch's excellent "Dead Man", Gary Farmer plays an indian named "Nobody". Nobody's real name translates to, "he who talks loud and says nothing", but he prefers "Nobody". I submit that while ESR portends to disclaim his need for fame and glory, in secret, he considers himself more in the mode of Depp's character, "William Blake".

In the movie, Depp arrives in the town of Machine after a prolonged train ride to discover the job he was traveling to was filled my another applicant. The owner of Dickinson's Metal Works (think Gates and Microsoft) orders him out at the point of a gun. Depp hits a saloon, meets a woman selling paper roses, trysts, gets discovered by her ex-lover, shares a bullet with his tryst-mate, shoots the ex-lover, and flees into the wilderness (of open source), where he meets "Nobody", who stays with Depp for the rest of his short life.

Gunplay, women and syllogistic responses... just the type of thing that ESR eats for breakfast.

Texas joke of the day

Two men were driving through Texas when they got pulled over by a State Trooper. The cop walked up and tapped on the window with his nightstick. The driver rolled down the window and WHACK, the cop smacked him in the head with his nightstick.
"What was that for?!?" the driver screamed.
"You're in Texas, boy," the trooper answered. "When we pull you over in Texas, you better have your license ready by the time we get to your car."
"I'm sorry, officer," the driver mumbles, "I'm not from around here."
The trooper checks the guy's license -- he's clean -- and hands him his license back. The trooper then walks around to the passenger side of the car, and taps on the window. The passenger rolls down the window and WHACK, the trooper smacks him on the head with the nightstick.
"What was that for?!?" the passenger yells.
"Making your wish come true, son" replies the trooper.
"Making WHAT wish come true?!?" the passenger says.
"I know your type," the trooper continues. "Two miles down the road you're gonna turn to your buddy and say, 'I just wish he'd tried that wh*t with me!'"

More layoffs in Spokane

Boeing Spokane to lay off 200 people

SPOKANE, Wash. -- The walkout by thousands of Boeing Co. workers in the Seattle area is also causing layoffs at an airplane parts factory in Spokane.

Triumph Composite Systems Inc., laid off about 45 workers on Wednesday, and up to 200 could be out of work by week's end, said Triumph President MaryLou Thomas.

Yet only 18 months ago, we had high-fives all around:

Triumph Group Inc. (Wayne, Pa., U.S.A.), a global aerospace services company specializing in control systems and repair and overhaul, has completed the acquisition of The Boeing Co.'s Spokane fabrication operation. While the acquisition terms were not disclosed, Boeing agreed to an eight-year, single-source contract with Triumph to continue to supply components to Boeing Commercial Airplanes. Triumph says that its new business, which will now be known as Triumph Composites Systems Inc., is projected to add approximately $60 million (USD) of revenue for fiscal year 2004.

And hey, when one of the largest labor unions in the country starts laying off its own (Spokane-based) workers, and your local county government RIFs 200 doctors and nurses, you know your economy sucks.

Geez Spokane... wouldn't you rather have doctors and nurses caring for the mentally ill that an over-reaching, arrogant, dangerously omnipotent bureaucracy? Wouldn't you rather have firefighters and police than Eric Skelton's pompous ass lecturing you (and your children)?

A year ago, the "Spokane Journal of Business" printed an article that, while optimistic on the surface, contains dark currents.

An index intended to show the direction in which Spokane’s economy is headed has reached its highest point possible, providing “the strongest and most positive interpretation of the local economic trends” since the index was created, its author says.

Translation: its all downhill from here (there).

When Fairchild AFB is closed after the next round of "re-alignment" (hint: when they take the airplanes away, the Air Force has moved on), Spokane will suffer a devastating blow to its economy. One in twenty people in Spokane County is employed by Fairchild AFB, and one in every thirteen dollars of Spokane's failing economy is due to the presence of Fairchild AFB.

Spokane is (not) safe

Several weeks ago, the owner of Spokane Web Communications who designed and maintains the SCAPCA website, complained about my protest of SCAPCA's illegal tactics and shady science.

What irked Tony DeStefano (the owner who complained) the most was that I had dared mention "child molestation" in conjuction with his ultra-pure SCAPCA site. The thing is, Spokane is FULL of child molesters.

Now, The Seattle PI jumps in with a piece titled "Lurid stories of sex and abuse shock Spokane area". I've reproduced the entire thing here.

Lurid stories of sex and abuse shock Spokane area

By NICHOLAS K. GERANIOS
ASSOCIATED PRESS WRITER

SPOKANE, Wash. -- It's been a year of staggering news for a region that likes to bill itself as a good place to raise a family. The Spokane area seems awash in pedophiles.

Local residents were already reeling from months of revelations about pedophile Catholic priests when a judge ruled last week that individual parishes, parochial schools and other church property can be sold to pay off victims and their lawyers.

This spring, the local newspaper reported that Mayor James E. West was a closeted homosexual, used the Internet to seek dates with young men and molested boys as a sheriff's deputy decades ago. West vehemently denies any wrongdoing.

Then it was revealed that officials at the Morning Star Boys Ranch, a revered local institution, may have tolerated physical and sexual assaults against troubled boys. A lawsuit filed last week contended that, as punishment, some boys in the past were photographed with flowers sticking out of their rectums.

In nearby Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, Joseph Edward Duncan III is accused of bludgeoning to death three members of a household as he kidnapped two small children for the purposes of sex. One of those children, 9-year-old Dylan Groene, was killed. His sister, 8-year-old Shasta Groene, was with Duncan when he was arrested in May.

Many residents worry about the effect on the region's children of seeing authority figures like West and Catholic priests tied to lurid stories, and repeated images of Duncan on television amid details of kidnapped and slain children.

"Children are not equipped developmentally to handle this kind of information coming at them all the time," said Connie McCleary, director of the Spokane Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Center. "It's hard for everybody, even professionals."

The West revelations were too much for Shannon Sullivan, a single mother with a high school education and no record of civic involvement. With little help, she drafted and pushed a recall proposal past various legal challenges. Locals are now signing on in droves.

"This is a moral issue for me, not a political one," Sullivan said.

The number of pedophiles in the United States is not known, but mental health experts estimate that 4 percent of the population suffers from sexual orientation toward children, the vast majority of them males. In 1999, 93,000 kids were sexually abused, and 70 percent of the perpetrators were family members.

The widely-publicized Spokane cases are somewhat interconnected, involving a group of men in positions of authority in the Catholic Church, Boy Scouts and Spokane County sheriff's office in the 1970s and early 1980s.

The key players in this group were former Catholic priest Patrick O'Donnell, deceased sheriff's deputy David Hahn, deceased insurance executive George Robey, and convicted child molester Tim Carlson.

Hahn and West were friends and fellow Spokane County sheriff's deputies. They shared leadership of a Boy Scout troop before Hahn killed himself in 1981 when he was being investigated for child molestation. West has said he never knew Hahn was a pedophile.

O'Donnell, who has repeatedly denied requests for interviews, is named in 52 of the 140 claims of sexual abuse filed against the Spokane Diocese. The diocese has filed for bankruptcy, blaming the lawsuits.

Court documents contend that O'Donnell and Robey were friends who would molest boys on their boats on Lake Coeur d'Alene in the 1970s. O'Donnell for the past two decades has been a mental health professional in Bellevue, Wash.

Robey killed himself in 1982, also amid allegations of pedophilia. For years, a Camp Fire lodge at Camp Sweyolaken near Coeur d'Alene was dedicated to Robey after his family raised money for the building. The plaque was recently removed.

Robey and Carlson were leaders of Scout Troop 353 at Hutton Elementary in a posh neighborhood on Spokane's South Hill.

Robert Brewster, a prominent Spokane real estate developer, was in their Boy Scout troop and went on campouts with them.

"Yes, there were inappropriate things done and talked about," Brewster said, declining to disclose more about the incidents.

Brewster has also questioned West's friendships with Carlson, a former roommate, and Hahn, saying those close associations raise troubling concerns about the mayor.

West has denied knowing that Hahn or Carlson were pedophiles.

"I have said before and I repeat again that the allegations that I molested young boys years ago are entirely false," West has said. "I have never had improper contact with a child."

O'Donnell has also been accused of raping a boy at the Morning Star Boys Ranch, which is operated by the Catholic Church.

Last week, Morning Star was sued by two former residents who claim they were sexually abused by counselors. The lawsuit filed in Spokane County Superior Court contended that in one incident, two counselors forced several boys to pose for photographs with flowers protruding from their rectums. O'Donnell is not a defendant is that lawsuit.

Morning Star officials issued a statement in which they said: "The ranch has never knowingly allowed or condoned abuse of any kind." The ranch has cared for nearly 1,300 boys since opening in 1956.

Former residents have also rushed to the ranch's defense.

"We're here because we think we benefited greatly from Father Joe (Weitensteiner, the director) and from the ranch," said Ray Clary, 49, a Spokane attorney. "We hope the port in the storm we know as Morning Star will be there in the future."

Is Spokane really Safe?

Tom Sowa writes that Spokane may be safe from natural disasters.

"Spokane has been traditionally a secure geographical area," he said. That attribute has significant value for companies who want to be sure their records and key information can be saved or backed up, he said.

Well yeah, until the next time St. Helen's blows up.

Until Spokane is buried in hot ash again, you'll loose your shirt and soul if you try to live there. The fuckers who run the town persecute anyone "different", be they a gay mayor or someone who is trans-gender and lacks the resources to fight back. Or, perhaps you're pregnant, and you want a divorce from your estranged husband, who is a conviced felon and wife-beater. In Spokane, you'll be denied a divorce until you have the baby. (I can't imagine this happening in New York, Los Angeles, or even New Orleans.)

I can't recommend Spokane unless you're over 50, white, male and independent of any real need for an external income (because Spokane's economy sucks) and you must be Catholic.

Further, you must be wililng to accept the superiority of your (new) masters, as they know whats good for you. NO INDEPENDENT THINKING. GOT IT?

If you try to run a business, you will die the death of 1,000 cuts. Every agency in Spokane has its hand out, and there are fees for just about everything. Further, there are snitches at every corner who are all too willing to turn you in for the slightest infraction.

Finally, you must not give a damn about crime, because if you live in Spokane, you will be robbed. When it happens (not if, when), the police will be far too busy with "real crime" to deal with your mere theft.

You're unlikely to die in a flood or hurricane living in Spokane, this much is true. You're also likely to end up wanting to take your life with your own hands.

I've lived in Spokane, and were I faced with the choice of New Orleans or Spokane, I would choose New Orleans without a second thought.

More on Eric-the-Alien, SCAPCA's Idiot-in-Charge

Another pull quote from the article referenced in the previous posting, "It's important for public health that asbestos is handled properly. It causes cancer in humans. Our goal is to keep as much asbestos out of the air as possible," said SCAPCA Director Eric Skelton..

Eric Skelton once said to me (and my attorney) that, "a single fiber of asbestos can cause cancer". A line I'm sure he's used on other SCAPCA victims, in front of jurys and perhaps even a gay bar or two.

It only works on the uninformed, no matter the setting.

I quickly countered that Eric's science was entirely lacking. Eric did not retort. Here are the facts. The EPA says differently. Quoting:

"No studies are available on the acute (short-term) effects of asbestos in animals or humans". and the money quote: EPA has classified asbestos as a Group A, human carcinogen, based primarily on inhalation studies, and has calculated an inhalation unit risk estimate of 2.3 × 10-1 (fibers/mL)-1.

Thats 2.3 fibers per 0.1ml. Or, put another way, 0.23 fibers per ml. For those of you unfamiliar with the metric system, thats about one fiber per teaspoon. If you think this sounds low, you're wrong, its actually a pretty high concentration. What are your chances of finding even a single asbestos fiber in a teaspoon of air? All day? Every day for 20 years?

Ding! Now you understand.

Moreover, adult human lung capacity is normally stated as 4-6 liters, or 4000 to 6000 cm^3, or 4000 to 6000 ml. This is approximately 800 to 1200 teaspoons, or one to one-and-a-half gallons.

Using the EPA facts, a cancer risk is present when you inhale in between 920 and 1380 fibers in a single breath. Note thats risk not causes, and it says nothing about short-term, incidental exposure. If the density of asbestos fibers is below this limit, the EPA considers this below the acceptable limit for danger to humans via inhalation.

So what about your "Single Fiber causes cancer" statement, Eric?

I say, "Bullshit".

The people who contract "Mesothelioma" commonly worked in shipyards, or other areas where they were exposed to very high levels of inhaled asbestos, for prolonged periods of time, without protective gear.

What are your chances for inhaling enough asbestos walking down the street in Spokane to cause you to contract mesothelioma several years down the line? Pretty fucking low, unless you happened to live near the 1300 block of North Maple before 1975,. Then again, its likely that if you live in Felony Flats, (or on East Sprague) you have other problems with which to contend.

Libby, Montana is a different story, of course.

Meanwhile, Eric Skull-fuck-em continues his luddite tirade in an effort to scare the local citizenry of Spokane into allowing him to keep his cushy job. Eric can be reached as epskelton-at-scapca.org. I'm sure he values your opinion.

SCAPCA "unfair"

Says the Spokesman Review. Quoting:

"It's important for public health that asbestos is handled properly. It causes cancer in humans. Our goal is to keep as much asbestos out of the air as possible," said SCAPCA Director Eric Skelton.

"If it's such a toxic site, why has it sat here for four years?" countered Lee.

Why, indeed.

"That was an abuse of power," Gore said. "This site had been sitting open for four years."

Skelton said he was trying to break the impasse.

"I felt he (Gore) was just going to let it sit indefinitely," Skelton said. After the contractors said the timeline was unrealistic, Skelton said he agreed to a delay of final cleanup until Oct. 15.

I see, so Eric-the-alien Skelton decided to levy a $10,000 per day fine in order to "break the impasse". Not because someone had done wrong, or released asbestos into the atmosphere (that had happened four years ago during the fire) but, lets face it kids, because SCAPCA is trying to raise funds for itself, and once there were *new owners*, Skelton, using his until-now unchecked powers, moved in to extract tribute, like the kinds of old.

I think a public accounting of SCAPCA's finances is in-order. SCAPCA used to publish their budget and the minutes from their board meetings online. That stopped, without any explaination.

They are still a public agency, no?

What would a pre-verbal child think of an alien-looking being jugling not one, but three earth-like objects?

Why does the alien in this page have an entirely-too-phallic head? (Are there child sex offenders employed at SCAPCA?

Holy Fuck, Condi

When the going gets tough, the tough go shopping?!?!?! FOR SHOES!!!!???!!!???

According to Drudge, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has recently enjoyed a little Broadway entertainment. And Page Six reports that she’s also working on her backhand with Monica Seles. So the Gulf Coast has gone all Mad Max, women are being raped in the Superdome, and Rice is enjoying a brief vacation in New York. We wish we were surprised.

What does surprise us: Just moments ago at the Ferragamo on 5th Avenue, Condoleeza Rice was seen spending several thousands of dollars on some nice, new shoes (we’ve confirmed this, so her new heels will surely get coverage from the WaPo’s Robin Givhan). A fellow shopper, unable to fathom the absurdity of Rice’s timing, went up to the Secretary and reportedly shouted, “How dare you shop for shoes while thousands are dying and homeless!” Never one to have her fashion choices questioned, Rice had security PHYSICALLY REMOVE the woman.

I got my gun at the ready, gonna fire at will

What the hell kind of "Kill 'em all, God will sort them out" mentality is this? What kind of sheer idiocty is required in order to encourage the police and National Guard to "shoot to kill", when the situation on the ground was already tense to the point of boiling over?

I predict a massacre and then a huge cover-up.

I'm a rolling thunder, a pouring rain
I'm comin' on like a hurricane
My lightning's flashing across the sky
You're only young but you're gonna die

Something about Dirty deeds, done dirt cheap.

Fucking SCAPCA

SCAPCA, the Spokane County Air Polution Control Authority, is in the news. Apparently the EPA no longer considers Spokane's air to be 'dirty'.

The last time Spokane's air exceeded federal carbon monoxide standards was 1996, Skelton said. The last measured violation of particulate standards occurred in 1993.

But Skelton said there are concerns that Spokane may begin violating EPA standards for ozone, another pollution caused by cars.

Translation: "Please don't cut my funding."

In the meantime, SCAPCA is defending itself against the outraged citizens it relentlessly persecutes.

Northwest Renovators Inc., a company that renovates buildings, showed two copies of lab results provided to SCAPCA by Mountain Laboratories. Owners Michael Lee and Doug Gore contend that one copy of the report, regarding the asbestos contamination inside a burned-out building, were doctored by SCAPCA.

I am not suprised. I've delt with SCAPCA. They need to be shut down. Skelton and some of his crew need to go to jail.

There is also this. For God's sake, Spokane, SCAPCA can arbitrarily decide to stop the snow plows. "Stagnant air alert"? Whats that? Where are the regulations that govern that?

I've met Skelton, and he reminds me of the type of career bureaucrat who can't have regular bowel movements. He's an anal-retentive asshole in every sense of the term. He'll do anything, say anything, break any law, even violate the Constitution to keep his cushy job around, and he does it all with a smug grin on his face, knowing that he can twist other career bureaucrats to his point of view.

Those in the know understand that the EPA's re-classification of Spokane's air has NOTHING to do with SCAPCA, and everything to do with the 1990 Clean Air Act, and its 1997 revision. Eric did nothing but create a job for himself.

Spokane, its time to disband SCAPCA, and throw Skelton in jail with the child sex offenders.
